steelersI am a huge…unbelievably huge…fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I grew up in the days of the Steel Curtain, when Terry Bradshaw was a star quarterback and not a game day commentator, when the original immaculate reception occurred and the Terrible Towel  was first waved. There are those readers who may think less of me for my love of the Steeler Nation and those who may join me. All I know is that for my family, friends, school and town the Steelers were, and continue to be, all important.

When I find myself in situations in which football is the center of the conversation, I am proud of my home team and eager to say I support them. Even when things aren’t going as well as I would like (and after I’ve yelled at them from the safety of my home) or when a new player comes on board who just isn’t doing his job, I continue to be their fan and want them to do the best they can to win the game, the playoff, the Super Bowl. And I might add that they’ve won the most Super Bowls of any team in history. But I digress.

What does this have to do with education? With WMS? With children? What does it mean to be a part of our team? Who is our team?

We are team WMS. We are proud to be a part of such a wonderful school doing such remarkable things. This past week students and parents were invited into our Elementary Maker Studio for a Maker Morning. Those who visited learned about circuits and programming and drawing and creating. Parents were happy to be a part of their child’s school experience, and their children were delighted to share their world. At the same time, parents work hard to support the school through the parent co-op, baking for and running  our events, making copies, working in our gardens, helping out in the classrooms, and cheerfully asking what is needed and how they might help. Parents ask thoughtful questions that serve to make us better.

We are a team and are all a critical part of WMS. Each and every one of us is important. Without each other we cannot do what we do best – support children in their growth and learning. We don’t need a Steel Curtain or a star quarterback because each one of us is the glue that keeps our team together and helps our school thrive.

Thank you for being a part of WMS.

What is hard for you?

Room 13 - Bryce Hundred BoardEach of us has had the experience of learning something new and finding it easy. For some, learning about scientific theories comes easily and “just makes sense.” For others anything math may be fun, challenging and engaging. No two of us are exactly the same in these ways. I, for example, have learned about Greek and Roman gods many times…and I know very little. It’s not because I didn’t listen, read or do my assigned work. It’s simply because it doesn’t and never has interested me. Before you rush to judgment, think for a moment about what you have learned, perhaps multiple times, that you simply didn’t like learning. Now that you are an adult do you remember it? Do you know as much about that topic as you do about something that truly captured your imagination? Often it doesn’t matter how difficult the subject matter is. It’s about our engagement. Continue reading →

Amazon, Book Fair

readingcelebration17A new version of the annual Wilmington Montessori School Book Fair was held on Thursday, December 4. As our experience with books and how they “look” shifts, we felt like the traditional book fair should be changed to reflect some of those changes. This year a group of hard-working parents met with Assistant Head of School Laurie Orsic to discuss how to make this happen. In the end, the event was a huge success with books, authors, story time and crafts for all. Of course technology was incorporated into the experience in a couple of ways. A few authors were present to share their books while many others “visited” the Book Fair through videos, sharing the writing and illustration process. Laptops were set up for ordering through Target and Amazon. Using the Amazon link through the WMS website gives the school 4-6% of the cost of the item. It is an easy way to support the school and to do your shopping year round. Continue reading →

Hunger Banquet, Thanksgiving, world hunger

hungerbanquet2hungerbanquetLast week as most of us prepared for Thanksgiving and a table of plenty, I had the pleasure of attending a Hunger Banquet with the students in our 9-12 Program. This is an event that takes place in the upper elementary program every three years, demonstrating that many people do not have enough to eat. This year, the statistic represented was that 60% of the world’s people barely have enough food to eat, 30% have just enough to survive, and 10% have plenty.

The teachers could simply share these statistics and discuss the problem of world hunger. However, they choose to provide an experience that will stay with the children for a long time to come; it makes an lasting impression. The children randomly choose a card as they enter the room and that card determines where they will sit. The children who are in the 10% have a full course meal at a beautifully set table; they have more than they can eat at one sitting. The rest of the room has a minimal amount of food to share. The staple this year was rice for 60%, and rice and beans for 30%. Children happily sat in their places and shared the food before them, eventually noticing that not everyone was eating the same thing. The three children at the big table got up at one point to share their food; they said that they felt guilty for having so much. Continue reading →
