Reading this article about the lasting benefits of preschool once again affirms Maria Montessori’s approach to educating young children. A study in North Carolina followed nearly 1 million students from preschool through fifth grade. The results showed that when children attend a high-quality preschool program, the benefits last. High quality is defined as “small class sizes, student-directed learning, and lots of open-ended play.”

Following the Montessori Method allows us to establish classroom practices that support exploration and learning for all children. The prepared environment is set up for children to succeed. They are gradually introduced to each item on the shelves and how they are used. The social environment is safe and welcoming; children learn to care for each other through positive interactions as well as the predictable challenges that occur while building relationships and sharing spaces.

We encourage enrollment at young ages in order to help provide that strong start in school. Play is the work of children. They need to explore. Their success in the Elementary Program is built on the foundation of the Toddler and Primary classroom practices. Children know how school works. They know how to care for their classroom and each other. They learn how to solve problems and watch others as they learn. They are not confined to learning only the lessons they are ready for, but can also observe the learning of others, discovering what comes next, igniting the sense of wonder and expectation. As the NPR article states, preschool is worth it. Its foundation provides a lasting effect for learning well through elementary school and beyond.

Last week, my family celebrated Easter. Although my children are now “grown ups,” it is a holiday we look forward to with great anticipation each year.

Years ago, we began the tradition of having an egg hunt with friends, and we continue that tradition to this very day. Now, however, there is no one under 25 in the hunt, and some of the participants are well into their 30s! Some friends come just for the hunt and egg dyeing. They gather around the kitchen table, create beautifully dyed eggs, and vote on who created the best egg this year. Then it’s outside for the hunt! The hunt ends when they get tired (20-somethings wear out fairly quickly) and someone finds the GOLDEN EGG. Continue reading →

HappinessI was catching up on some blogs, saw this engaging picture and had to read more. The post was about happiness; it went on to list things that happy people do. Not too far from the top was this item:

They see like a scientist (with an open mind and objective analysis), think like a farmer (with reverence and interdependence), and behave like an artist (with creativity and disavowment of convention).

There are many other items on the list that you will find interesting – perhaps things that you do or would like to do – but this one made me stop and think. What I have learned about myself during the past few years is that I like to think and learn new things; engaging my mind is relaxing to me. Playing with ideas is fun. I know… most of us recall days in school where we “had to learn” and it was hard, didn’t make sense or appeared irrelevant. If we were lucky we encountered a teacher, a subject or a small area of interest that ignited curiosity and engaged us on a deeper level of learning.

This statement about happy people seeing like a scientist, thinking like a farmer and behaving like an artist is exactly what we strive to do at Wilmington Montessori School each day. Children from the youngest ages have opportunities to approach ideas, familiar and new to them, to notice as much as possible and then consider them and how they relate to their world and the wonder contained there. They interpret ideas in a variety of ways and are asked questions that help them see more deeply and prompt further questioning and understanding. They do this hard work and try to fit their new knowledge into the framework of their world, which expands to include the broader world as they grow. Children are able to see the world with an open mind, to appreciate the connections and dependence between people and our planet, and to approach it with a creative spirit that will lead to solutions that demonstrate an appreciation for and care of our future. That is happiness; that is learning.
