ReadingWhat is your favorite picture book?

Is it one you read or had read to you as a child or possibly one you have read to your own child, maybe over and over again? There are so many wonderful picture books – many that are funny and heartwarming, others nothing short of inspiring. You might think of picture books as only appropriate for young children. I encourage you to read this post on Pernille Ripp’s blog. It is one of two posts where she shares several new picture books that will inspire and delight readers of all ages.

At WMS, we read picture books to toddlers as well as the our 9-12 students. We use them to delight, enchant and inspire. Take a few minutes to relish a book in your collection or in ours. You won’t regret it.

Heather Siple-first day-016As I moved throughout the building this week, I once again realized the effort that goes into helping children feel at home in their classroom. There were tears on the part of parents and children; starting school can be a tough transition for everyone. What I noticed most is what the Wilmington Montessori School staff does to make each classroom a warm, welcoming safe place.

The first six weeks of school are spent with a focus on establishing community and getting to know one another. What we know is that feeling secure and part of the group are the basis for learning. If children do not feel valued and included, they will not be ready to learn and will not try things new to them, worrying about making mistakes and what others may think. Once a group is cohesive, children will take the risks inherent in learning. They will venture a guess, try a new piece of work, make mistakes and accept guidance as offered.

At WMS we work hard to create classroom communities that allow children to thrive and to support each other as they learn. Everyone comes to school with varying strengths and challenges. Our classrooms embrace student learning. Focusing on the social curriculum allows this atmosphere to persist throughout the year.

4 agreements

Our staff was challenged to choose one of the Four Agreements to practice over the summer months. As part of our goal in working to build relationships and strengthen community, we participated in professional development in June which outlined the Four Agreements as shared in Don Miguel Ruiz’s book of the same name. Each of us chose to focus on one of the agreements and to return to school in August prepared to discuss our success and challenges with this work. It is an ongoing opportunity for our growth and increased knowledge of ourselves and each other.

As you know from our mission statement, lifelong learning is a strongly held value at WMS. Not only do we work to develop our students’ interest in learning, as a staff we are engaged in learning and developing through our work at WMS. Our professional development ranges from learning about best practices in education to “nurturing our spirit,” which is a strong component of the Montessori philosophy. One of the reasons we choose to work at WMS is to continue our journey of discovery and growth.
